Altos de Cantillana Expediciones & Ecoturismo – Valle de Aculeo – Chile

The Aculeo Lagoon and the Altos de Cantillana area has for many years caught the attention of part of the scientific community and state and private institutions related to environmental and cultural issues. This is due to its high environmental value, represented by wide biodiversity of flora and fauna, environments, and scenic beauty, added to the historical and cultural heritage of the region.

The Aculeo basin contains everything from lake ecosystems to forests and sclerophyll shrubs, to distinctive Santiago oak forests and high-Andean communities, as well as relics from the last ice age. All these attributes are what make this place unique and what has brought it international recognition and led to the creation of the Altos de Cantillana Biodiversity Conservation Project drives by GEF/PNUD/CONAMA, and the creation of the Altos de Cantillana Reserve, which has raised the protection status of the area.

Additionally, the area’s cultural diversity associated mainly with the “huasa” and country farmer culture of the central valley, which also represents a strong indigenous occupation, generated a number of traditions and customs that are in danger of disappearing.
